The epicenter Tuesday was Larry Wert's NBC Tower office. Shock waves were felt not only at Tribune Tower and WGN-Ch. 9's headquarters, but as far away as Dallas.
Wert, who in April added responsibility for four other NBC-owned stations besides Chicago's WMAQ-Ch. 5 as NBC Local Media's president for the Central and Western Region, plucked Tom Ehlmann, vice president and general manager of Tribune Co. flagship WGN-Ch. 9, to run KXAS-TV in Dallas for him.
Sliding into Ehlmann's WGN post, at least on an interim basis, is Marty Wilke, Channel 9's head of sales since 2002. A Downers Grove native who early in her career was an account executive at WGN, Wilke had returned to the station as local sales manager after a stint with that job at Wert's Channel 5.
"This is something I never could have imagined but always worked for," said Wilke, whom insiders peg as the early favorite for the top WGN job on a permanent basis.
