Mayor Richard Daley on Tuesday portrayed the Loop shootings near last week's Taste of Chicago as isolated incidents and said it would be impossible for police to prevent gang members from attending the event.
The mayor dismissed the notion that the shootings could hurt the city's bid for the Olympic Games. He said the downtown shootings were "off site" from a festival attended by 3.5 million people during a 10-day period and there were "no problems" at the event itself, despite the presence of gang members.
"We had a number of individuals in and around the CTA, and at a distance—they all knew each other—started shooting," Daley said of the shootings Thursday near Van Buren and Dearborn Streets, which police were investigating as possibly gang-related.
One person was killed and several others were injured in the shootings blocks from the festival. Police presence at the Taste was increased in the wake of the shootings.
