How it works
1. Post a Chicago link. (No sign up required!)
2. Watch as people vote up, click on, and discuss it and our network writes about it.
3. The best links make the front page and are delivered via daily e-mail, rss, twitter and more.
The days of CTA bus supervisors biding their time in wooden sheds, clipboards in hand, counting passing buses and waiting for service problems to come to them are over.
Instead of sitting in 37 stationary posts that will be torn down next month, bus supervisors will hit the streets in hybrid vehicles equipped with lap-top computers.
Using a newly enhanced application of the GPS-based Bus Tracker system, they’ll be able to access real-time information on how buses are running and head straight to the scene of service trouble.
“The supervisor sees it on their map [and] we hold them accountable…If they see three buses traveling together or two buses traveling together, they drive to where the problem is, and then they re-time the buses to more effectively spread them out,” CTA President Ron Huberman told a news conference at the CTA’s 74th Street bus garage.
